Sheffield !!!
In this personnal page, I’ll take a bit about why my english isn’t so bad (compare to my second year english) : Sheffield !!!
I did an Erasmus year in this wonderful city located in South Yorshire, less than 50 miles at the east of Manchester.
In this page, I’ll show you the important places for me (lots of pubs but other places too) :
The Hadfield :
This is the first pub I came with my housemates (6 English guys) during my first night in England (I’ve never been in England before). After a long and tiring journey, I finally found my new home (thanks to the cab’s driver). After a brief presentation, the first question they asked me was : “Fancy a pint ?”. After asking them to repeat (I didn’t know the meaning of “fancy”), I followed them in this pub. At this time, I could’nt imagine what was a regular drinking sessions in England.
After few pints (probably to many for me at this moment of the year), I was really relieve when we finally left the pub : I thought it was to go home. But obviously they didn’t follow the way home. We were going to another pub : Bar1
Bar1 is one of the uni’s pub (there’s actually 3 pubs in the union of the University of Sheffield). The drink is really cheep (1£50 the pint, 1£ the tequila’s shot …), it’s full of students and the atmosphere is really cool and you can watch football’s game. After few more drinks, we finally came home, I came straight to bed, slept a lot, and surprisingly woke up with a huge headache… I was sure that this year was going to be a great year.
As I wrote before, there are three pubs in the union (voted the best students union in britain by the virgin alternative guide, such a reference !) : Bar1, Cafe revolution (no alcohol, just fruit juices and stuffes like this …) and : THE INTERVAL.
The Interval is not open until late (it’s closed around 10pm) but there is an amazing beer garden, you can have some great food (potato wedges topped with cheese, garlic bread …) and the beer isn’t more expensive than in Bar1, the ideal place to have few drinks after a day of lectures (sometimes three hours of lecture in the same day !!!).
Contrarily to what you may think after those few lines, I didn’t spend my all year in pubs (truly !). Another important place was of course the University. There is two university in Sheffield : The University of Sheffield (mine, the best one !), and Hallam University (rubbish…). I don’t really understand why, because there’s a lot of subject you can study in both universities.
The University of Sheffield can easily be found thanks to the Arts Tower : an ugly and really high tower shading all the economics and letters studies.
I used to study in the Hicks building, the physics & mathematics building. Not a lot to say about it : Some uncomfortable lecture theatres, some study rooms and the professors offices.
180a Crookesmoor road :
Put on the top of a bathroom’s shop, this flat was perfectly located : close to the university, not too far from the city center, a near a Coop shop. I spend a lot of time in this place, talking with my housemates (Dave, Paul, Dan, Liam, James and Ben), playing with them at Pro Evolution Soccer or Mariokart or just watching TV.
It’s probably thanks to my housemates that my year was so amazing, they’ve been really helpful at the beginning, even if they didn’t speech english at all (exept maybe : “Bonjour, ca va ?”, “Saucisson” and “Voulez vous couchez avec moi ?”), they helped me (and my really poor english) to have a new phone, a bank account, register at the university… and they’ve always been there to party, talk or just have fun watching any soap (neighbours, Hollyoaks) or other cheesy programs on TV.
I’ll try to insert some pictures of all these places and people later, because I don’t really understand how it works
